Latinas' Experiences of Breast Cancer Treatment in Santa Cruz County

Description

This Community Research Collaboration (CRC) grant for $212,000 is to conduct a pilot research project titled "Latinas¹ Experiences of Breast Cancer Treatment in Santa Cruz County". The research period will be for 18 months from September 2013 through February 2015. Meghan Halley, PhD MPH, an Assistant Research Anthropologist at the PAMF Research Institute and Carla Gomez, LCSW, the Healthy Breast Campaign's Outreach Coordinator at PAMF Santa Cruz, collaborated to develop the research proposal based on ongoing outreach work to the Latina community in Santa Cruz. Ms. Gomez currently performs outreach to low-income Latinas at local community events, community clinics and other venues to educate them on the importance of breast cancer screening and available resources for treatment and helps them navigate the screening and treatment process. The pilot study will use in-depth interviews and structured surveys to identify the underlying factors shaping low-income Latinas' breast cancer treatment experiences and decision-making in Santa Cruz County, then use community stakeholder forums to identify and prioritize changes that can have a measurable impact on breast cancer treatment for this community.
