About Your Stay

Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center offers a surgeries and procedures ranging from hand surgery and baby delivery to colonoscopies. Highly skilled surgeons, nurses, technicians and support staff work hard to create an environment where you and your family will feel comfortable and safe before, during and after your procedure.

Our specialty surgery areas include gastroenterology, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopedics, gynecology, cosmetic surgery, gastroenterology, plastic surgery, podiatry and physiatry (pain management). Many of our clients undergo outpatient surgery and go home the same day.

What to Bring

If you’re having surgery, we will provide a gown, slipper socks, disposable underwear and pads, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste and a hair dryer.

For maternity patients, we also provide a nursing gown, T-shirt for your newborn, compostable diapers and a diaper bag with extra disposable underwear and diapers.

You might want to bring:

  • Robe, gown, slippers and other comfortable, loose clothing for before and after your surgery or birth.
  • Favorite personal items and toiletries.
  • Music players.
  • List of current medications, including over-the-counter medications and supplements.
  • Insurance ID and photo ID.
  • Medical forms, including an Advance Health Care Directive or other forms supplied by your doctor, if applicable.
  • Any necessary medical equipment, such as a CPAP machine.

If you’re having a baby, you may also want to bring baby clothes, blankets, cloth diapers (if using) and a car seat for your newborn.

Please leave jewelry, cash, credit cards and other valuables at home.

When You Arrive

Report to the admitting area located in the hospital lobby. An admissions representative will ask you some questions to confirm and update your medical information. If you are a pre-registered maternity patient, please go to the admitting area before proceeding to the Perinatal Unit.

You may be asked to sign several documents pertaining to your admission and stay, and you’ll receive a hospital wristband to ensure correct identification at all times.

As part of Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center’s identity-theft prevention program, hospital employees may request photo identification from you during admission. This simple step helps prevent unauthorized access of your health insurance information or personal medical history. It also ensures that we have the right information to provide you with quality care.

While You are Here

Our staff will show you how to use your adjustable bed, emergency call buttons, phone, TV/DVD player, and Wi-Fi. Please discuss with your care team whether you should get out of bed without help. If you need to speak to a nurse, press the call button on the cord attached to your bed.

Disability Accommodations

We adhere to the federal and state standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for accessibility throughout the building, including all entrances, hallways, bathrooms, patient rooms and other patient and visitor areas. Please call (831) 477-2210 if you have any questions.

Visitors

Because your recovery is our primary concern, please remind visitors of a few simple rules:

  • Visiting hours are from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Family and other care partners are welcome at your bedside 24 hours a day.
  • Children younger than 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times and are not permitted to visit if they have either a potentially contagious illness (fever, rash, diarrhea, cold, etc.) or recent exposure to a communicable disease, such as the flu.
  • If you desire, a family member or friend is welcome to spend the night in your room. Due to space, we may not be able to accommodate more than one overnight caregiver. 
  • If you are in the pre-op area, one family member may stay with you until you are taken into the operating room.
  • Following surgery, one family member at a time may be allowed to visit with you in the recovery room.

Bedside Reporting

To keep you and your family informed, change-of-shift reports between caregivers is done at your bedside. You may decline bedside reporting if you prefer.

Guest Services

A Guest Services Associate is available every day from 6:00 am to 12:00 am to help with your non-medical needs. Instructions for paging Guest Services are in your Room Service Book. 

Room Service

Room service is available from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. You may order your meals according to your own timetable by calling Nutrition Services, extension 2244. Please allow up to 60 minutes to prepare and deliver the meal.

If you want a lighter meal, have food allergies or special dietary needs, or don’t see what you want on the menu, ask your Guest Services Associate or Nutrition Services Associate for help.

Your guests are welcome to eat with you. They may order from the same room-service menu or visit the café. You may pay for each meal in the café or you may run a credit card tab.

Mail, Flowers and Balloons

Mail and flowers will be delivered to your room. Mail should be addressed to your name and room number at Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center, 2900 Chanticleer Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95065. Any mail received after your discharge will be forwarded to your home address.

We strongly discourage latex rubber balloons due to allergy concerns. Mylar balloons are preferred.

Telephone

Family and friends may call you by dialing (831) 477-2200 and asking the hospital operator to ring your room. You may make local calls from your room at no charge.

No Smoking

Our facility is 100 percent smoke-free and tobacco-free.

Going Home

If you have any questions or concerns about leaving the hospital, you can meet with a discharge planning nurse by calling extension 2233 from your room phone, or prior to your hospital stay by calling (831) 477-2233. A discharge planner may work with you to coordinate any services you might need at home, such as nursing care, therapy or personal assistance.

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Santa Cruz County has provided quality home healthcare services for more than 50 years. Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Call (831) 477-2600 for more information.
