Sutter Roseville’s Volunteer Doula Program

Sutter Roseville Medical Center’s doula program provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to patients during the childbirth process.

Doulas at Sutter Roseville Medical Center are trained in the physiological and emotional aspects of childbirth. They’re also educated in the stages of labor and delivery. Our doulas nurture laboring patients through one of life's most precious events.

Doulas also facilitate communication between the patient, their partner and their healthcare providers. The doula acts as a guide through the labor process, making suggestions to help the patient cope with the intensity of contractions. As a labor partner, they’re educated on tools that can help patients feel more comfortable during labor and birth, including hydrotherapy, birthing stools, therapeutic touch and massage.

Selecting a Doula

If you would like a doula at your child’s birth, discuss this option with your healthcare provider during your prenatal visits. When you’re admitted to the birthing center in labor, or for a medically necessary induction, inform your nurse that you’d like to have a doula, and one will be provided if available.

Become a Volunteer Doula

The volunteer doula program is administered by registered nurses in the birthing center who have many years of experience in labor and delivery. We appreciate the care and commitment of prospective volunteer doulas who wish to join our labor support team. Our staff provides full orientation and training. Acceptance to the program is based on an application and interview process.

Our doula program is a highly sought-after opportunity with rigorous requirements. Those who apply and are accepted to the program agree to a minimum two-year commitment and will be expected to fulfill 6, 8 or 12 hour shifts to total 24 hours per month. Volunteer doulas must also attend periodic meetings for ongoing education and the hospital’s volunteer program.
