Dr. Yan is a data scientist and biostatistician, and a Principal Investigator at the Sutter Health Center for Health Systems Research (East Campus, currently operating as Sutter's Research Development and Dissemination). She specializes in methodology development and the application of advanced analytics using Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other clinical data in evaluation, disease prediction, and population health management.
Dr. Yan’s expertise includes predictive modeling, phenotyping/classification, observational study design and evaluation, pragmatic trials design and evaluation in real-world settings.
She has 10 years’ experience as a principal investigator, co-investigator, and biostatistician for epidemiologic research, methodology, and translational to clinical practice in healthcare systems. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NHDDK, NIHLB, and NINLM), the Donaghue Foundation, and various pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Yan develops predictive models to predict early onset of disease (e.g., heart failure), and applies machine learning models and natural language processing (NLP) models to identify disease phenotypes. She collaborates with Sutter researchers and stakeholders on advanced analytics in population health management and point-of-care initiatives. Dr. Yan leads Sutter’s Center for Health Systems Research efforts to use audit data from EHRs to measure, standardize, and improve clinical processes at Sutter and at other medical centers nationwide.
Dr. Yan received master’s degrees from Chinese Academy of Sciences (in geophysics) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (in seismology), and a PhD in statistics from the University of Memphis/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
