Navigating Cancer Treatment with “Care, Compassion and Love.”
“As a registered nurse I have seen how frightening and overwhelming it can be to receive a cancer diagnosis. Being an oncology nurse navigator gives me an opportunity to help patients and their families throughout their cancer journey by educating and supporting them while they prepare for surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. We coordinate appointments, arrange translators and connect them with resources for financial and social support. But the most rewarding part of my job is the relationships I build, like the one I have with the Tam family, while providing our patients with the best possible care.” — Alexandra Block, R.N., BSN, B.A.
“The amount of care, compassion and love they give to their patients at CPMC is much more than what I’ve experienced in other hospitals.” — Tam Cheung Keung
“I remember the first meeting we had with the doctors to talk about my dad and find out if he could be saved or if this was it for him. It was very emotional and Alexandra was there the whole time to support us. Ever since, she has been our main point of contact. We talk three or four times a week and no matter what the issue —no matter how small— she always responds. The whole team is amazing.” — Candy Tam
About the Cancer Patient Navigation Program
Patient navigation is a crucial part of cancer care that can be expanded and improved with philanthropic funding. Patients with a cancer new diagnosis face a rush of considerations, new medical terminology and decisions, and it’s not always easy to know what to do next.
CPMC offers patients and their healthcare team access to dedicated Cancer Nurse Navigators to partner with patients each step of the way from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. The Nurse Navigators serve as a single point of contact and can help patients and their families understand the diagnosis, explore treatment options, prepare for treatment, recover after treatment has ended, and more.
