Critical Care Units

When you’re confronting a life-threatening condition or recovering from a complex surgical procedure, you want access to an attentive, experienced team. Sutter care centers have critical care services through specialized units dedicated to patients in need of cardiac, medical, trauma, surgical and neurosurgical critical services.

Child in critical care unit

Our specially trained critical care specialists provide around the clock care and support to extremely ill patients and their families. Patients admitted to a critical care unit, also known as an intensive care unit, are monitored by a team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, social workers and chaplains. Each unit is equipped with highly sophisticated technology and machines such as heart and respiratory monitors and ventilators.

Depending on your unique situation and condition, you may be placed in a special type of critical care unit that focuses on cardiac, medical, surgical, trauma, neurological, neonatal or pediatric care. Most hospitals have medical and surgical intensive care units, but you may be transferred to a different hospital or trauma care center if you need a higher level of specialty care. Trauma centers offer 24-hour, immediate access to specialists such as trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and radiologists.

If your child is in need of critical care, we offer special pediatric intensive care units. Our pediatric critical care doctors are assisted by a wide range of pediatric subspecialists, including nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, rehabilitation specialists and multiple other healthcare professionals comfortable caring for critically ill and injured children. We also provide emotional, developmental and educational support for children and counseling for family members dealing with a crisis.

Across the Sutter Health network, our hospitals are among the first in multi-county regions to be designated trauma centers. Many of these centers are housed in hospitals cited as top performers in quality by the Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accreditor of healthcare organizations, and the Leapfrog Group, the nation’s premier advocate of hospital transparency.
