Frequently Asked Questions

COVID-19 Vaccine

OpenWhich groups are eligible now and what verification is needed?

Sutter is currently vaccinating the state’s most vulnerable populations, including those age 65 and older and healthcare workers. These groups are at greatest risk, according to CDC guidance.

We’re eager to provide a vaccine to anyone who would like one, but we must prioritize the highest risk patients due to limited supply. As vaccine supply and appointment capacity expand, we’ll broaden eligibility. Eligible patients will be notified and provided with instructions on booking a vaccination appointment. You don’t need to take additional action at this time.

Healthcare Workers: Please be prepared to show verification of your healthcare worker status at your visit. This can be a badge, license, paystub or other type of identifying paperwork. If you're age 16-17, you can receive the Pfizer vaccine with consent from your legal guardian. Call (844) 987-6115.

OpenWhen can more patients and the general public expect to be offered the vaccine?

We’re distributing the vaccine in phases according to expert recommendations. The timeline for distribution depends on vaccine supply and the guidance of public health officials.

We’re currently offering COVID-19 vaccinations to healthcare workers, as defined by the CDC, and Sutter patients age 65 and older because they’re at highest risk.

Vaccine supply is limited and unpredictable, and we’re unable to give specific dates about when we’ll be able to expand eligibility. We’re rapidly expanding appointment capacity by opening mass vaccination clinics across Northern California. We’ll notify our eligible patients and provide instructions on booking a vaccination appointment.

OpenHow will I know when I’m eligible for vaccination at Sutter?

Check our website for the most up-to-date information about the vaccine rollout. As eligibility expands, we’ll notify our eligible patients and provide instructions on booking a vaccination appointment.

We need to keep our COVID-19 Vaccine call center and online booking through My Health Online available to help eligible patients book their vaccination appointments. If you’re not yet eligible for a vaccine, check our website for updates and watch for email notifications. Please don’t call or message your provider about scheduling COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Your provider isn’t able to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments or grant eligibility exceptions. We know there’s a lot of interest in the vaccine. We appreciate your patience throughout the process.

If you’re not yet enrolled in My Health Online, sign up now to easily schedule appointments, including your COVID-19 vaccination when it’s your group’s turn.

OpenWhat happens if there are unused doses at the end of the day? Is there a waiting list I can sign up for?

Sutter vaccination sites are making every effort to let no dose go unused. In cases where there are appointment cancellations or remaining vaccine at the end of the day, we contact scheduled patients to come in early. All vaccinations are by appointment only.

OpenWhat is the cost of getting a COVID-19 vaccine?

There’s no out-of-pocket cost to you to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

OpenDo the COVID-19 vaccines have any side effects? Should I be worried about an allergic reaction?

Scientists anticipate that most recipients will experience mild to moderate flu-like side effects, including fatigue, chills, muscle aches and fever. These side effects should resolve in one to two days, and show your immune system is responding to the vaccine.

After you receive the vaccine, you need to remain on-site for at least 15 minutes so we can monitor you for severe allergic reactions and provide immediate treatment if needed.

According to the CDC, if you’ve had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient in an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, you should not get either of the currently available mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. If you had a severe allergic reaction after getting the first dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, the CDC recommends that you should not get the second dose.

OpenHow many doses of a COVID-19 vaccine will I need?

Both vaccines currently available require two doses. You’ll get an initial vaccination, then a second shot — three weeks later for the Pfizer vaccine or four weeks later for the Moderna vaccine.

The appointment for your second dose will be scheduled during your first appointment. Please note that you must receive both doses at the same location.

OpenWill we still need to wear masks and practice physical distancing once a vaccine is available?

Yes, masking and physical distancing will continue to be critical tools in preventing transmission until a large percentage of the population is vaccinated. We’re also awaiting more information about the long-term protection of the vaccines.

OpenHow do COVID-19 vaccines work?

Vaccines are designed to stimulate the human body’s own protective immune response, so that if a person is infected, their immune system can recognize the infection and react to it. While vaccines are developed in different ways using different methods, it’s important to remember that they can’t give you COVID-19.

OpenAre COVID-19 vaccines safe?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that mRNA vaccines are safe and effective. The vaccines are held to the same rigorous standards as all other types of vaccines in the United States. Both vaccines were found to be safe and effective in tens of thousands of adults who participated in double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials – widely considered the gold standard for testing pharmaceuticals.
