Question

What are the symptoms of athlete's foot and what is the best way to get rid of it?

Answer

Symptoms of athlete's foot can include itching of the foot and between the toes, and redness and peeling between the toes and/or around the foot in a moccasin distribution. Frequently people with athlete's foot don't have any itching. Many people present with dry, peeling skin and think that they have a dry skin condition which in reality is classic athlete's foot.

Mainstay treatment is a prescription for an antifungal cream to be applied twice daily. Sometimes oral antifungal medication is used for a more recalcitrant condition. Other treatments include changing socks more frequently, alternating shoe gear from one day to the next and using antifungal spray or powder in the shoes.
