Education at Sutter

KARLI MATTER: Hi.
My name is Karli Matter and I'm a second year surgery resident
here at Sutter Roseville.
There's a lot of things that I love here about this program.
First and foremost, I really love the community.
They tell you in medical school that you're going
to find your best friends.
I didn't find them necessarily in medical school,
but I really feel like I'm finding my family here.
I think also that we have established
a culture that is very encouraging of get
your work done and go to the OR.
If there is downtime on my service,
I'm scrubbing into other cases.
I'm asking attendings on other services, "Mind if I scrub in?"
And the answer is usually yes.
I think so far what has been the most exciting
is the operative exposure.
Being here, it's been really exciting to work so closely
with all of my attendings.
Learning different procedures, procedures
that I had only read about before
and now I'm seeing and doing, that's all been really amazing.
The surgeons who are operating are teaching you.
So when you ask a question, the answer
is coming from experience, it's coming from an area of passion,
and it makes the learning inherently
so much more engaging.
During medical school, I had opportunity
to do some rotations at Sutter Amador
and I absolutely fell in love with the area,
I fell in love with Sutter.
I wasn't sure at that time if it was the community, being
in a smaller town or if it was Sutter as a whole,
but I'm starting to think that it's both.
I think that there is a lot of hurdles for me
to get through first, namely deciding fellowship
or no fellowship, but when looking for a place
to practice, I know that I'll be looking
for a close-knit community.
I know that I want to remain close to family.
And I want to be in a beautiful place close to nature.
For me, Sutter Roseville has ticked a lot of those boxes.
I definitely could see myself practicing here.
