Chest Pains During Exercise

Question

I have pains in my chest when I exercise. Is this a warning symptom of some blockage in my arteries? Are there other symptoms?

Answer

Chest pain while exercising can be a classic symptom of heart problems – indicating some degree of blockage of the arteries to the heart. This symptom should not be ignored.

Anyone with chest pain on exertion (exercising, walking, moving about) should have this evaluated by his/her physician.

If the pains do not stop when you are resting, the problem may be more serious, especially if combined with other possible symptoms of heart attack, such as sweating, nausea, dizziness or extreme fatigue. In these cases, do not delay – call 911.
