Cholesterol Too Low?

Toni J. Brayer

Toni J. Brayer, M.D.

California Pacific Medical Center

Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation

Question:

We hear about high cholesterol, but can someone have cholesterol numbers that are too low?

Answer:

That's a good question, as we usually are focused on cholesterol levels that are too high. Our cells and body depend upon cholesterol for healthy functioning. There are genetic, metabolic and dietary factors that all contribute to our cholesterol levels.

We shoot for low numbers in both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. For HDL levels, a higher number is better than a low number. The optimal targeted ranges depend upon individual risk factors and any ongoing heart disease. There is no absolute level that is considered "too low".
