Endometriosis and Hormone Replacement Therapy

Medically Reviewed by

Question

I was told that my endometriosis will go away once I pass menopause. What if I decide to take hormone therapy during menopause - will that continue to aggravate the endometrial lesions?

Answer

For women who have a history of endometriosis and choose to go on hormone therapy, the hormone therapy will not stimulate endometriosis - if they take continuous estrogen and progesterone. The progesterone reduces any stimulation of endometriosis from the estrogen.

These are very low doses compared to a woman's own endogenous hormones, so it should not stimulate the growth of more endometriosis.
