Frequent Urinary Tract Infections After Menopause

Medically Reviewed by

Question

Since I went through menopause, I am getting more UTIs. Is this normal? Why does it happen?

Answer

Frequent urinary tract infections (UTI) after menopause are common due to lack of the estrogen hormone which keeps the vaginal and periurethral tissues healthy and able to withstand most bacteria that enters into the urinary tract.

I recommend you visit with your gynecologist to discuss possible treatment with vaginal estrogen cream. If you are a candidate for this, it can help diminish your UTIs.
