Hysterectomy and Loss of Libido

Medically Reviewed by

Question

Two years ago I was diagnosed with a rare uterine cancer. The doctors took everything including some lymph nodes. I've always had a healthy sexual appetite but since my surgery I feel numb - like a robot with no feelings. Is there anything I can do?

Answer

It is quite common after having a complete hysterectomy and removal of the ovaries for women to feel a loss of libido. The ovaries produce hormones such as estrogens, progesterones and androgens which are partially responsible for sexual desire in females.

There are some medications you can try however you will need to do this under the guidance of a physician. I urge you to schedule follow-up visit with a gynecologist who may be able to tailor a bioidentical hormone therapy for you to try. It is possible to have some reawakening of your sexual desires, however some women do not benefit from the medical therapy. Please note that the treatment will have to be cleared with your oncologist to make sure that none of the hormones would contribute to a recurrence of your cancer.
