Question

I'm a women in her 50s who is going through perimenopause. I have only had one menstrual period this year. Is there still a possibility that I could get pregnant?

Answer

Pregnancy is very unlikely at this age and stage of minimal ovarian function. Ovulation is so rare and the egg quality is probably so poor that fertilization would not likely result in pregnancy. However, this is not 100 percent protection against pregnancy.

The best thing would be to consult with your gynecologist. A blood test can be run to check the stage your ovaries are in. If this test, FSH, comes back indicating minimal or near absent ovarian function, then chances of pregnancy are less than 1 percent, which is the same rate as most methods of birth control.
