Question

What is autism?

Answer

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, processes information, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. The word “spectrum” highlights the many ways autism shows up for the 1 in 31 children diagnosed with it. Some people may be nonverbal, or have intellectual difficulties, strong communication skills or passionate interests.

It’s important to know that autism isn’t an illness to be cured. It’s simply a different way of thinking and feeling. Every person is unique, yet common symptoms or patterns of autism may appear, including:

  • Intense interests in specific topics, often referred to as special interests
  • Rhythmic movements like swaying or hand wringing, known as stimming, can help soothe or self-regulate behavior
  • Sensitivity to sounds, lights, or textures
  • Strong preference for routines or sameness
  • Trouble with social cues and norms, such as eye contact and interpreting conversations

With improved screening and awareness, more people with autism are being seen, diagnosed, and helped earlier in life. Diagnosis often involves looking at how a person communicates and interacts with the world, along with input from those who know them well, like family members, caregivers and teachers.
