Internal Medicine residents will rotate through a wide range of general and subspecialty-based experiences, primarily based at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Residents receive clinical training through bedside teaching, small group discussions and daily conferences.

Electives Offered: Cardiology, Nephrology, GI, Hemonc, Pulmonary, Integrative Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Research, Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care

Residents receive 4 weeks of vacation which is scheduled during elective weeks.

This is a sample schedule 

PGY1

  • Inpatient: 20 weeks
  • Continuity Clinic: 10 weeks
  • Night Float: 4 weeks
  • Infectious Disease: 4 weeks
  • Cardiology or GI: 4 weeks
  • Nephrology: 4 weeks
  • Medical ICU: 8 weeks
  • Elective: 2 weeks

PGY2

  • Inpatient: 16 weeks
  • Continuity Clinic: 10 weeks
  • Neurology: 4 weeks
  • Night Float: 4 weeks
  • Medical ICU: 8 weeks
  • Cardiology or GI: 4 weeks
  • Elective: 6 weeks

PGY3

  • Inpatient: 12 weeks
  • Continuity Clinic: 10 weeks
  • Endocrinology: 4 weeks
  • Hematology/Oncology: 4 weeks
  • Rheumatology: 4 weeks
  • Night Float: 4 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Medical ICU: 4 weeks
  • Elective: 6 weeks
