Newborn Screenings

Bringing home a newborn is exciting — and amid the joy, your baby’s hospital team will perform a few crucial health checks. These newborn screenings help make sure your baby starts life on a healthy path.
Two key tests usually given in the hospital are hearing screening and blood screening. They are fast, gentle and important tools to spot conditions that are treatable when caught early.
Hearing Screening
Hearing loss is the most common birth difference, affecting about 3 out of every 1,000 newborns. Because the first three years are critical for speech and language development, identifying hearing issues early boosts your child’s chances of better language and social growth.
If your baby doesn’t pass the initial screening, your care team will guide you through next steps and possible follow-up tests. Early intervention can make a big difference.
Blood Tests for Newborns
Before going home, your baby will also get a blood test as part of your state’s Newborn Screening Program (in California, this is required by law). This test checks for several rare but serious conditions that affect metabolism, hormones, or the blood.
Catching these conditions early allows treatment to begin quickly — often preventing long-term issues or healthier outcomes over time.
Are the Tests Safe?
Yes — both screenings are simple and low risk. The hearing test involves no needles; for the blood test, a few drops are taken from your baby’s heel and sent to a state lab. Many babies barely notice!
Getting the Results
Your baby’s pediatrician or newborn care team usually receives the results a few weeks later. If any results require follow-up, you’ll be contacted via letter or phone with clear instructions.
Most babies’ results are normal. If further evaluation is needed, your healthcare provider will help you through the next steps, including referrals to specialists.
Helping Your Baby Thrive
While these screenings help detect serious issues, nothing replaces close attention and care from you. Feed your baby regularly, stay alert to how they respond to sound or interaction, and always bring up any concerns at your baby’s checkups.
