When to Call Your Doctor During Pregnancy

Some symptoms just can’t wait.

August 19, 2025Medically Reviewed byJill D. Foley, M.D., FACOG

Pregnancy brings many changes to your body — some expected and some surprising. But certain symptoms are worth calling your provider about right away. It’s always better to check than to wait and wonder.

Call your provider right away if you have:

  • A sudden headache that won't go away
  • Blurry vision or seeing spots
  • Chills or a fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Fewer baby movements than usual (later in pregnancy)
  • Fluid leaking from your vagina
  • Heavy bleeding or pass blood clots
  • Itching, especially on your hands or feet
  • Pain or burning when you pee
  • Regular contractions before 37 weeks
  • Severe cramping or abdominal pain
  • Signs of dehydration (dizziness, dry mouth or not peeing much)
  • Swelling in your face or hands

If something feels off and you're not sure what to do, call. That's what your care team is there for. And if you think it might be an emergency, don’t wait — go to the nearest hospital or call 911.
