Coping With Poor Air Quality
During wildfires in California, the air quality is often poor. When air pollution is bad, it can irritate your eyes, nose, and throat, cause shortness of breath, and aggravate asthma and other respiratory conditions.
William Isenberg, M.D., Sutter Health’s chief quality & safety officer, offers the following precautions during this time of smoky or poor air:
- Stay indoors, if possible
- Use air conditioning, if available
- Stay hydrated. Aim to drink an 8-ounce glass of water, eight to 10 times per day.
- If you have asthma, emphysema or other respiratory diseases, use your maintenance inhalers. In addition, carry your rescue inhaler with you if you leave home.
