Relief for Joint Pain

At best, joint pain can get in the way of enjoying your favorite hobbies and activities, such as dancing or painting. At worst, painful joints hinder your movement and make everyday activities, such as climbing stairs, difficult or impossible to perform. At Sutter Heath, joint pain specialists can help with treatments designed to increase your range of motion and relieve chronic discomfort.

Joint pain, whether mild or severe, may result from injury, overuse, medical conditions such as gout or arthritis, or infection. If your joint pain lasts for more than three days or occurs with non-flu fever, rapid weight loss or severe swelling, it’s time to seek help.

Your doctor will perform a detailed assessment to determine both the cause and the best approach for your individual needs and desires. Tests may include X-rays, blood tests and a joint fluid study. Treatment options may include:

  • Over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSDAIDs), such as ibuprofen
  • Prescription medications
  • Hot or cold packs
  • Topical gels or creams
  • Assistive devices, such as doorknob covers, braces, canes and orthotics
  • Steroid injections
  • Weight loss
  • Exercises, such as stretching
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Complementary medicine, such as acupuncture
  • Joint surgery or replacement
