Mills-Peninsula Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)

Having a baby prematurely or born with a serious health issue can be one of the most frightening and overwhelming events in a parent’s life. Mills Peninsula’s Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides life-saving technologies for premature babies or those born with serious health issues. If a baby requires transfer to a higher level NICU, mom can be transferred too.

    Compassionate Critical Care

When the start of your child’s life begins with a lengthy hospital stay, the impact on your entire family can be monumental. In these difficult situations, it's reassuring to know that California Mills-Peninsula Medical Center provides specialized medical care and the latest in technology and advanced therapies to babies born prematurely or with serious health conditions.

Our Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides around-the-clock care for your baby. While in the NICU, specially trained nurses will care for your infant, using interventions such as nesting, swaddling, dimmed lighting or clustering care, which helps maximize infant rest time. We also encourage parent and infant bonding, but be advised that it is important for premature infants to experience decreased stimulation in the first few weeks of life. Once your baby leaves the hospital, we work with California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco for followup care.

    Visiting the NICU

For your infant’s safety, we ask you to keep an identification band on at all times. If for any reason it comes off, we must re-band you and your infant. The only visitors allowed to visit your baby are healthy adults and siblings. If your infant is with us for many weeks, and you wish to have a list of approved visitors who may visit when neither parent is onsite, the visitors’ first visit must be with one of the parents.

    Parent Accommodations

If you have been discharged from the hospital and your infant is not ready to go home with you, we encourage you to continue to participate in your baby’s daily routines. There is a sleep chair in your infant’s room that converts into a twin sleeper, allowing you to stay overnight in the NICU. Remember, you will need to pick up or bring your medications with you, and meals are not provided. The Atrium Café, located on the first floor, is open for breakfast from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, lunch from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and dinner from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

    Family Lounge

A family lounge is located just behind our NICU, which has a full-size restroom with a shower and a small area for both parents to relax and eat meals. A microwave and coffee maker are provided for your convenience.

    Genetics Research

    Sutter Health Genetics Research
Genetics studies the genes and DNA coding that each person inherits from their parents and how these genes can lead to disease or better health. Some inherited genes cause diseases such as Tay-Sachs or sickle cell anemia, while mutations in genes can cause genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome. However, doctors also use genetics to understand which treatments may work best for an individual.
