Community impact

Our not-for-profit commitment

Sutter’s not-for-profit mission includes supporting programs and services that help improve individual and community health through partnerships, sponsorships, and community benefit investments. This includes free and reduced cost medically necessary care to eligible patients in need, covering unreimbursed costs of care to patients with Medi-Cal, and investing in training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

In 2025, Sutter provided more than $1.1 billion in community benefit, including:

$101 million in traditional charity care *

$830 million in unreimbursed costs of providing care to Medi-Cal patients

$101 million invested in workforce training and education and community health programs

Closing care gaps

As a not-for-profit health system, Sutter Health is committed to expanding access to care, addressing health disparities and improving the well-being of the communities we serve.

Our commitment extends beyond hospitals and care centers. Through partnerships with community-based organizations, local leaders and other health systems, we work to remove barriers to care and connect people with the health and support services they need to thrive.

To better understand local health priorities and identify the most pressing health challenges, Sutter Health conducts Community Health Needs Assessments every three years across the regions we serve.
