Are Birth Plans Necessary

Question:

Are birth plans necessary?

Answer:

Formal, written birth plans are not necessary. It is important to think through your wishes for your labor and delivery, but remember that the course of labor can turn out to be quite different than what you expected. It is good to be flexible and willing to re-evaluate if events happen that require a deviation from your plan for the sake of your baby, or you.

It is important to be aware of the usual protocols at your hospital and to discuss any special requests you may have with your doctor before coming to the hospital. It is also important to communicate with the nurses and doctors providing your care when you are in the hospital. Let them know your wishes and ask for explanations of any procedures if you are unsure why they are being done.
