Question
Are birth plans necessary?
Answer
Formal birth plans aren’t required. It’s helpful to think through what you’d love for your labor and delivery, but it’s also good to remember that things can unfold differently than you expected. Staying flexible — and willing to adjust if something comes up that’s best for you or your baby — can make the whole experience feel a lot less stressful.
It also helps to know what’s typical at your hospital and to talk with your doctor ahead of time about anything that’s especially important to you. Once you’re in the hospital, keep the conversation going with your nurses and doctors. Share what matters to you, and don’t hesitate to ask why a procedure is being done if something isn’t clear. You deserve to feel informed, supported and confident every step of the way.
