Non-Fat Milk vs. 1% - 2% Fat Milk

Deborah Kurzrock

Mills-Peninsula Medical Center

Question:

I'm a 55 year old woman. Is non-fat milk or 1 or 2 percent milk better for me?

Answer:

I would suggest non-fat milk if you are not trying to gain weight and you are drinking milk as a good source of protein and calcium.

All three varieties have the same amount of calcium and protein per serving. Non-fat has fewer calories and only trace amounts of fat. I am not sure how much you are drinking but milk can be an important source of calcium in your diet. For your age, you should be getting at least 1200mg of calcium per day. An 8 oz glass of milk has 300 mg of calcium.
