Pre-Diabetic - Now What Should I Do?

Astrin Damayanti

Astrin Damayanti, R.D.

Question:

I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I need help formulating a plan to avoid becoming diabetic. What can I do to reverse my diagnosis?

Answer:

You are absolutely right - you can prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes. The primary treatment for pre-diabetes is exercise and weight loss.

When beginning an exercise program, start slowly. Your goal should be to accumulate at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.

If you are overweight or obese, you also need to focus on losing weight. Reducing weight by seven percent is typically what I recommend. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and eliminating caloric drinks, including juices, is a good start. Reducing portion size is also effective.

Many of my patients have improved their glucose levels back within a normal range through these steps of weight loss and exercise, alone. Good luck and I wish you good health!
