Preventing a Second Stroke

Medically Reviewed by

Question

My dad had a stroke about a year ago and is doing better now, but it made me wonder - is there any way to prevent another one from happening (like a better diet, exercise)?

Answer

There are several things that a patient can do to prevent another stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).

First and foremost, the patient should make sure that they are following up with their primary doctor or neurologist, to ensure that all of their stroke risk factors are treated and that they are taking the appropriate medications (such as blood thinners, blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications, and medications for diabetes).

Patients can also make sure that they exercise regularly and maintain a balanced and healthy diet low in saturated fats/cholesterol.

Finally, patients can change certain habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
