Question

What are your favorite snack ideas for people with diabetes?

Answer

Many diabetics will eat snacks during the day to keep blood sugar levels balanced, and keep meal portions under control. However, know that having diabetes does not mean that you have to snack, especially if you need to control your weight.

Good snacks can include items with very little or no carbohydrates, such as protein foods and non-starchy vegetables. Try to limit carbs to 15-30 grams per snack. In addition, keep your snacks to 150 calories overall.

Here are my favorite smart snack ideas for diabetics:

  • Cut up vegetables (baby carrots, celery, broccoli) with low fat dressing
  • ¼ cup of nuts
  • A string cheese or an ounce of low fat cheese
  • One hard-boiled egg
  • One light soft cheese wedge with five crackers
  • A single serving of non-fat greek yogurt or light yogurt
  • Two to three cups of low fat popcorn
  • A cup of sugar-free hot chocolate
