Newsweek | Named Sutter Health among America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. The magazine examined publicly available data, held interviews and conducted an anonymous survey of 220,000 employees at companies across the country.
Webby Award: Scout by Sutter Health, a digital wellness tool for teens and young adults, was named Best App and Software in Health, Wellness and Fitness at the 28th Annual Webby Awards.

U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals | Thirteen hospital campuses within the Sutter Health network earned recognition as high performers in one or more procedures or conditions. High performing is the highest possible rating for procedures and conditions and is earned by only a small minority of hospitals. Additionally, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Sutter’s Mills-Peninsula Medical Center ranked among the best hospitals in the state.
Reputation.com | Named Sutter Health a Healthcare System Industry Leader in Reputation’s 2023 Healthcare Reputation Report, based on online patient sentiment. Sutter placed fifth on the list, and first among California-based health systems. Additionally, sixteen care centers and thirteen physicians achieved a reputation score of 800 or higher, demonstrating better customer satisfaction compared to the industry average score of 428.
College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) | Named Sutter Health among its 2023 CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recipients as a Level 8 organization, for its adoption and integration of technology into patient care.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) | Recognized 10 Sutter hospital campuses with five stars- the highest ranking possible for the 2023 CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. An additional five hospital campuses earned four starts. The national average among all rated hospitals is three stars.
Integrated Healthcare Association | Recognized three Sutter-affiliated physician groups for achieving a 4.5 star rating or higher care of Medicare Advantage patients – demonstrating excellent ratings across twelve clinical quality measures. Additionally, six medical groups were recognized by IHA for being among the Top 10% of performers in either quality or patient experience or both for commercial HMO patients. Two physician organizations also earned the prestigious Excellence in Healthcare Award.

American Medical Association (AMA) | Recognized Sutter Independent Physicians and Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group as 2023 Joy in Medicine Organizations, for their commitment to preserving the well-being of clinical care team members through proven efforts to combat work-related stress and burnout.
Leapfrog Group | Recognized four Sutter hospital campuses with an “A” grade and seven with a “B” grade in their Spring 2023 Safety Grades. Additionally, three Sutter campuses earned an “A” grade and eight earned a “B” grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2023 Safety Grades.
Cal Hospital Compare | Recognized 12 Sutter hospitals for reducing cesarean births for first-time parents with low-risk pregnancies.
California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) | Recognized the Sutter Health system with an Early Implementer Award for its ongoing commitment to maternity care quality. Additionally, a total of thirteen Sutter hospitals campuses earned recognition in one or more of six Quality and Engagement Award categories.
The American Heart Association | Recognized four Sutter hospital campuses as STEMI Centers for meeting or exceeding care recommendations for patients presenting with an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) - a specific kind of heart attack that can be caused by coronary artery disease. Another Sutter hospital campus was recognized for the high-quality treatment of heart failure.
The American Stroke Association | Recognized 15 Sutter hospital campuses for providing a high level of stroke care. These hospitals are designated by The Joint Commission as Primary Stroke Centers or higher.
Blue Cross Blue Shield | Recognized twenty-one Sutter hospitals campuses as Blue Distinction Centers in one or more of the following categories: cardiac care, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery, bariatric surgery or maternity care as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.
Cal Hospital Compare | Recognized four Sutter hospitals on the 2023 Patient Safety Honor Roll.
Newsweek | Named Sutter’s Mills-Peninsula Medical Center and California Pacific Medical Center-Van Ness Campus, among the Best Hospitals in Calif Mills-Peninsula Medical Center and California Pacific Medical Center, along with Sutter Medical Center Sacramento and Sutter Roseville Medical Center, were also named among the World’s Best Hospitals for 2023.

California Department of Public Health | All Sutter hospitals have a current year (2023) Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll designation (Bronze, Silver, or Gold).
Becker’s Hospital Review | Named Sutter’s Eden Medical Center, Sutter Mills-Peninsula Medical Center and Sutter Roseville Medical Center among it’s Great Community Hospitals. Becker’s Hospital Review also named Sutter Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, Sutter Davis Hospital and Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center of Santa Cruz on their list of “top recommended hospitals in every state.” Becker’s Hospital Review also named Suter Health on several lists that recognize excellence in a specialty. They included: the nation’s “great” Oncology programs, the Spine and Neuroscience programs “to know,” the Heart programs “to watch,” and “great” Orthopedic programs “headed into 2023.”
Practice Greenhealth | Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, Sutter Davis Hospital, Sutter Amador Hospital and Sutter Center for Psychiatry earned Partner for Change awards from Practice Greenhealth. Efforts recognized include minimizing and recycling waste, addressing chemicals of concern, lowering energy and water consumption, sourcing food and products sustainably, and establishing environmentally preferable purchasing criteria.

Forbes | Named Sutter Health among America’s Best Employers for Women. Determining factors included potential for development, working conditions, diversity, salary and benefits.
U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals | Thirteen hospital campuses within the Sutter Health network earned recognition as high performers in one or more procedures or conditions. High performing is the highest possible rating for procedures and conditions and is earned by only a small minority of hospitals. Additionally, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento ranked among the best hospitals in the state (#42) and the Sacramento metro market (#4).
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) | Recognized as one of healthcare's Most Wired programs, supporting digital health needs of patients.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) | Overall, 86% of Sutter-affiliated hospitals earned ratings of five, four or three stars in the 2022 update to the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. Across the 21 Sutter-affiliated hospitals that were rated, the average rating was 3.71 stars. For comparison, the National average for all hospitals is 3 stars. Seven Sutter-affiliated hospitals earned 5 stars—the highest ranking possible.
The Integrated Healthcare Association | Recognized four Sutter-affiliate physician groups for achieving a 4.5 star rating or higher for their care of Medicare Advantage patients – demonstrating excellent ratings across twelve clinical quality measures. Additionally, four medical groups in the Sutter network were recognized by IHA for being among the Top 10% of performers in either quality or patient experience or both for commercial HMO patients. Cal Hospital Compare | Acknowledged 11 Sutter hospitals for reducing cesarean births for first-time parents with low-risk pregnancies.
California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) | Recognized a total of eleven Sutter hospital campuses in one or more of four Quality and Engagement Award categories.
The California Ambulatory Surgery Association (CASA) | Recognized Sutter Roseville Endoscopy Center with its 2022 Ambulatory Surgery Center of the Year Award. In addition, six of the eight honors awarded for ASC Excellence, went to Sutter ASCs.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons | Awarded Alta Bates Summit Medical Center three stars, the highest possible, for patient care and outcomes in both isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures and isolated mitral valve replacement and repair surgery. In additional Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento received three stars for transcatheter valve replacement or repair procedures.

Human Rights Campaign | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center was recognized on the 2022 Healthcare Equality Index as an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader. This two-year designation recognizes healthcare providers who uphold policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. Only 496 healthcare providers nationwide earned this designation in 2022 and this year represents the sixth time Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has earned this destination.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Association | Both campuses of Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center are currently Blue Distinction Centers in several specialties. The Alta Bates Campus is a Blue Distinction Center in knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and maternity care. The Summit Campus is a Blue Distinction Center in knee and hip Replacement and bariatric surgery. To earn these distinctions a hospital must demonstrate quality care, treatment expertise and better overall patient results. Facilities must reapply on a regular basis, typically every 18 - 36 months, to keep their Blue Distinction Center designation in each specialty area.
Optum Health Networks | In 2023 Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus was designated a Center of Excellence in bariatric surgery. To earn this distinction a hospital must demonstrate clinical qualification and cost-effectiveness to Optum’s Clinical Sciences Institute (CSI). Facilities must reapply on a regular basis, typically every 18 – 36 months, to keep their Center of Excellence designation.
Aetna Health Networks | In 2022 Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus was designated an Institute of Quality in bariatric surgery. This three-year designation recognizes hospitals that met standards of quality and cost efficiency set by the Aetna Institutes program.
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) | In 2021 both campuses of Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center earned Gold status on the CDPH Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Honor Roll. This three-year designation recognizes top performing hospitals committed to preventing the emergence of antimicrobial resistance infections.
Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation | In 2021 the Alta Bates Summit Outpatient Pharmacy and East Bay AIDS Center Pharmacy earned three-year accreditation in Specialty Pharmacy from URAC. Nationally recognized, URAC is a leading independent accreditation organization that has high standards for quality and safety. This accreditation demonstrates ABSMC's commitment to patient care and outcomes.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus earned Four Stars, out of five possible, in the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. This rating is higher than the National average of three stars.
U.S. News & World Report | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus was recognized as High-Performing in Stroke, Congestive Heart Failure, Colon Cancer Surgery, Heart Attack, Hip Replacement and Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus was recognized as High-Performing in Hip Replacement. High performing is the highest possible rating for procedures and conditions and is earned by only a small minority of hospitals.
American Stroke Association | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus earned Gold Plus recognition for the care of patients experiencing a stroke, from the Get with the Guidelines program. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive treatment that follows nationally recognized guidelines. Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus was also included on the Target Stroke honor roll, at the Elite level. This honor roll recognizes hospitals that met quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival and treatment.
Cal Hospital Compare | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus earned a place on the Maternity Care Honor Roll for meeting or exceeding a statewide target aimed at reducing C-sections in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies. This year represents the eighth time Sutter Roseville Medical Center has been recognized on the Maternity Care honor roll.
California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus earned an Early Implementer award and a Quality & Sustainability award from CMQCC for demonstrating a commitment to excellence in maternity care. These awards recognize Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s engagement in quality improvement projects to improve maternal health outcomes and the fact that the hospital did not exceed a target range for C-sections in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies.
Newsweek | Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center was recognized by Newsweek as among America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers for 2023. Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center ranked 9th in California. Only 280 inpatient rehabilitation centers nationwide were honored for their quality, service, follow-up care, accommodations and amenities.
Bay Area Parent's Best of the Best Awards | The Alta Bates Campus earned Silver for Best Birth Center in the East Bay Region.
Healthgrades | Both campuses of Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center were named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals, placing them among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical quality. The Summit Campus was also among America's 100 Best Hospitals in Gastrointestinal Surgery and both campuses were among America's 100 Best Hospitals in Critical Care, placing them among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide in these specialties. The Summit Campus was also named the #2 hospital in California for Gastrointestinal Surgery. Both campuses received Excellence Awards in Stroke Care, placing them among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for this specialty. The Alta Bates Campus also received Excellence Awards in Patient Safety, placing it among the top 5 percent, and in Joint Replacement, placing it among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide. The Summit Campus received Excellence Awards in Surgical Care, Pulmonary Care, Gastrointestinal Care and Gastrointestinal Surgery, placing it among the top 5 percent (gastrointestinal surgery) and top 10 percent (all others) of hospitals nationwide for these specialties. The Alta Bates Campus also earned Five Stars in the treatment of total knee replacement, total hip replacement, stroke, colorectal surgeries, treatment of GI bleed, and sepsis. The Summit Campus also earned Five Stars in the treatment of heart attack, heart failure, total hip replacement, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, upper gastrointestinal surgeries, colorectal surgeries, bowel obstruction, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure and sepsis.
