A Message From Our Program Director

Dear Residency Candidate,

Isabelle Cohen, MD, FACOG

On behalf of the faculty and administration of the OB/GYN Residency Program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center-Ashby Campus, I’d like to thank you for your interest in our Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program. We’re dedicated to providing an enriching academic and clinical learning environment that will successfully prepare residents for independent practice in the field of Women’s Health. In alignment with the mission of Sutter Health, the OB/GYN residency program will work to enhance the well-being of people in the community through a not-for-profit commitment to compassion and excellence in healthcare service.

Our residents will train under board-certified and licensed physicians with extensive teaching experience. These dedicated doctors will mentor residents and instill in them a desire for lifelong learning with a goal of improving their OB/GYN practices throughout their careers. My faculty colleagues and I will strive to train residents to provide patient-centered care that promotes medical advances using the latest research and technology.

The OB/GYN Residency Program’s high patient volume and unique cases will provide residents with hands-on experience and knowledge in OB/GYN and its subspecialties. Residents will train at two hospitals, Alta Bates in Berkley and Summit in Oakland, located less than three miles from each other. Clinical rotations include obstetrics, gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, gynecologic oncology, complex family planning, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Residents also spend time learning from outside departments, including the emergency room, the neonatal intensive care unit, ultrasound, internal medicine, and the surgical intensive care unit. Outpatient experience will be gained throughout training via the continuity clinic and an ambulatory rotation. We offer the flexibility to complete an elective rotation tailored to each resident’s goals and interests, and ensure extensive support to participate in research and quality improvement projects. This is an exciting time for OB/GYN education in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We welcome questions about the program. Please reach out to our GME Manager, Serena Smith, for more information. Again, on behalf of our entire faculty, thank you for your interest in our program. I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Isabelle Cohen, MD, FACOG
