The Transitional Year Residency Program is well-rounded, with exposure to a diverse range of patients, conditions, and practice environments. Residents will cycle through a variety of general and specialized experiences at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Clinical training is provided to residents through bedside teaching, small group discussions, and regular conferences.

Transitional Year

This is a sample Transitional Year schedule.

  • Inpatient internal medicine: 12-16 weeks
  • Admit Serv/Night Float: 2 – 4 weeks
  • Critical Care: 4 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • General Surgery: 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory/OBGYN Clinic: 4 weeks
  • Elective weeks: 14-20 weeks
  • Vacation: 4 weeks

Electives offered:
Anesthesiology, Neurology, Diagnostic Radiology, PMR, Integrative Medicine, Cardiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology (outpatient)
