California Pacific Medical Foundation
Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology Fellowship
Our one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship offers innovative training and expert mentorship.

Intensive Training and Innovation
One trainee per year is accepted into this fellowship, which provides an intensive, customized clinical training experience that covers all aspects of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. Your hands-on experience will take place at our CPMC Van Ness Campus, known for its high-volume cardiogenic shock service, which includes multidisciplinary care for managing shock, temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VA ECMO). We are also a renowned center for robust advanced heart failure and transplant services.
Since 1984, when we performed the first private medical center heart transplant in the western United States, we've completed over 500 heart transplants. We were the first center in the Nation to successfully support the heart transplant of a patient with a ventricular assist device. CPMC’s founding surgical director designed one of the first viable ventricular assist devices with large-scale success impacting thousands of patient lives. This legacy has forged our place among worldwide leaders of advanced heart failure therapies.

Immersive Guidance
With a 4:1 faculty-to-trainee ratio, our faculty members are deeply involved in every aspect of heart failure care at both the Sutter system and CPMC levels. As leaders in heart failure and transplant cardiology, they provide personalized mentorship for clinical training and research.

Complex Clinical Experiences
Your clinical experiences will cover a full spectrum of treatment, from cardiogenic shock management to post-transplant care, as you manage a wide range of complex inpatient and outpatient cases.

Broad Didactic Program
An in-depth didactic program complements your clinical training with a comprehensive series of lectures, journal clubs and case reviews focused on advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. You’ll participate in weekly sessions, grand rounds and conferences covering core topics, including pathology review, quality improvement and patient outcomes.
Supported Research
A robust research environment provides opportunities to collaborate on active clinical trials and quality improvement projects focusing on transplants, device and drug management, structural interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. Publish your findings with academic support and access to patient care databases.
