Research is an integral part of the CPMC ophthalmology training program. Our residents and faculty are actively involved in many clinical and multicenter projects. The Pacific Vision Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the CPMC Department of Ophthalmology, supports educational and research activities for all of our residents. Each resident is required to participate in research of their own choosing in conjunction with our faculty or the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute.

Residents are sponsored to present research findings at national meetings including AAO, ARVO, ASCRS, and others. Additionally, every year in June we host the Barkan Society Research Symposium. Named in honor of Dr. Adolph Barkan, a founder of the CPMC Department of Ophthalmology, Barkan day is our department’s resident research day. Each resident presents their research findings to the wider ophthalmology community including alumni. This is followed by a keynote address given by an invited ophthalmic researcher, and a cocktail reception.
