In partnership with Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California, the California Pacific Medical Center Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship provides its trainees with a well-rounded education in all aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. The two medical centers care for diverse patient populations and allow for exposure to a breadth of pulmonary and critical care pathologies. The fellowship strives to provide participating fellows the highest quality training in compassionate, evidence-based, high-quality, cost-effective care.

In 2021, in order to grow with the blossoming medical center and educational opportunities at CPMC the fellowship received support for program expansion and currently accepts two fellows per academic year. We reached our full complement of six fellows during the 2022-23 academic year. The graduate medical education office at CPMC supports numerous training programs and fellows will work alongside trainees in internal medicine residency, and fellows in general and advanced heart failure cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, neurocritical care, and endocrinology.

California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC)

Sutter Health is the largest private health care system in Northern California and California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) is its flagship academic medical center. CPMC has three campuses in the city of San Francisco; its newest and largest center is the Van Ness Campus (VNC) which opened in March 2019 and is a tertiary care referral center. Fellows will spend a majority of their inpatient training at VNC leading the medical ICU team, participating in the care of solid organ transplant recipients and those requiring mechanical circulatory support, and consulting on a burgeoning pulmonary medicine service. A full service interventional pulmonary team at VNC allows our pulmonary fellows to gain hands-on-experience with an array of state-of-the-art bronchoscopic modalities. Across the street, the accompanying medical office medical building is home to the San Francisco Lung and Sleep practice, where fellows will have their second and third year continuity pulmonary clinics under the supervision of the same high quality attendings who provide inpatient care at VNC.

Alameda County Medical Center-Highland Hospital

Alameda County Medical Center-Highland Hospital is in Oakland and its mission is to maintain and improve the health of all Alameda County residents, regardless of their ability to pay. As a public hospital located in one of the most diverse urban counties in the nation, Highland Hospital serves as the area’s level one trauma center. In 2020 Highland Hospital completed a multi-million dollar capital upgrades project and fellows will be able to train at this renovated medical center during their medical ICU, pulmonary consult, trauma, and ultrasound rotations. First year fellows will experience a pulmonary continuity clinic with a panel of patients who have a wide array of advanced pathologies, many of whom have not had access to regular medical care.

Davies and Mission Bernal campuses

A short shuttle ride away, the Davies Campus is home to our renowned Neuro ICU through which fellows rotate in their second or third year. CPMC is a comprehensive Stroke Center.  The Mission Bernal campus houses our full-service pulmonary function laboratory, pulmonary rehab program, and a ten-bed medical ICU.
