Goals and Objectives: 

Our goals for the obstetrical fellows are to:

  • Develop competency in all aspects of antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care
  • Develop advanced competency in operative obstetrics:
    • Primary and repeat cesarean deliveries (100+ as primary surgeon)
    • Operative vaginal deliveries
    • Postpartum tubal ligations
    • Third and fourth degree laceration repairs
    • Dilation and curettage
  • Perform, and/or interpret, non-stress tests, obstetrical ultrasounds, and biophysical profiles
  • Learn the foundational aspects of quality and safety in Labor & Delivery
  • Develop and maintain competency in teaching obstetrics to Family Practice residents and medical students

Methods

Obstetrical fellows will meet their goals under the direction of both SMG OB Laborist department physicians and the Family Medicine faculty.

The OB fellows will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide prenatal care in the outpatient clinical setting with FMOB attendings
  • Admit and manage patients on the Antepartum service, and Labor & Delivery 
  • Provide ongoing management to laboring patients
  • Perform normal and operative vaginal deliveries, including C-sections
  • Provide care in a Family Medicine clinic - one day per week
  • Participate in an OB focused Scholarly project (research or QI) 
  • Become an instructor for Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) training course 
  • Participate in resident OB chart review process (meets monthly)
  • Give 2 OB focused lectures given to FM residents during didactics 
  • Complete certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) program

The fellow will rotate working with our Maternal Fetal Medicine colleagues to get additional training in high risk pregnancies, antepartum management, OB focused ultrasound and gestational diabetes. 

Schedule

  • 12-month program
  • Average weekly schedule includes one day in a Family Medicine Clinic
  • Weekly flex day incorporate additional training in high risk pregnancies, antepartum management, ob focused ultrasound, gestational diabetes, NICU, Women’s health procedures and c-hyst experience. 
  • A minimum of 32, 12-hr L&D shifts per quarter
