About Me

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Andrew Haskell's goal as an orthopedic surgeon is to relieve musculoskeletal pain and improve function so patients can maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. He treats recent injuries and fractures, diagnoses and manages chronic conditions, and revises problems resulting from prior surgeries. He employs a team-based approach that includes physician assistants, nurses, orthotists, and physical therapists to achieve optimal outcomes.

Many conditions can be diagnosed through a careful medical history and physical examination. When appropriate, he utilizes imaging studies ranging from X‑ray to MRI, CT scans, ultrasound, and nuclear imaging. Conservative treatment is often the first step and may include physical therapy and home exercise programs, bracing or shoe modifications, and, when indicated, injections.

Dr. Haskell's areas of expertise include ankle reconstruction (including joint replacement) and injuries, shoulder and knee surgery (excluding joint replacement), and musculoskeletal trauma and deformity correction. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine and has completed fellowships in both foot and ankle surgery and orthopedic sports medicine. He has also completed additional training in ankle replacement surgery and Ilizarov and spatial frame deformity correction.

He uses arthroscopy of the ankle, shoulder, and knee to treat a wide range of conditions, including cartilage defects (osteochondritis dissecans), impingement, bone spurs, rotator cuff tears, labral tears, meniscus tears, and loose bodies.

He applies various cartilage preservation and regeneration techniques such as microfracture, morselized cartilage grafting, osteochondral autograft or allograft transplantation (OATS), ankle distraction arthroplasty, and realignment osteotomy.

When cartilage damage is beyond repair, he offers advanced total ankle replacement techniques. New FDA‑approved ankle replacement implants provide patients with ankle arthritis the potential for pain relief while preserving motion. He also performs revision surgery for failed ankle replacements completed elsewhere.

Dr. Haskell utilizes proven ligament and tendon repair and reconstruction techniques to restore stability and function for conditions including ankle instability and chronic ankle sprains, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (flatfoot), Achilles tendon tears, peroneal tendon tears and subluxation, ACL tears, patellar and quadriceps tendon tears, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder instability. Tendon transfers may also be used to address dynamic deformities following stroke or nerve injury.

He performs deformity correction using techniques ranging from flatfoot or cavus foot reconstruction and fusion for severe deformities to osteotomies and Ilizarov external fixation for complex foot, ankle, and lower‑extremity deformities. These deformities may result from gradual progression, acute trauma, failed fracture fixation, or infection.
