About Me

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Leif sees his role as a hospitalist to first acknowledge the difficulties faced by people requiring hospitalization and then offer heartfelt comfort—this along with the wisdom that comes from 30 years of practicing hospital medicine.

He believes that dealing with illness requires more than simply providing "pills and procedures," so he endeavors to engage his patients in ways of thinking and activities that promote healing both while in the hospital and upon discharge.

Community Activities

Dr. Leif serves as Advisor on Health and Healthcare at UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. He is a regular contributing author to The Society of Hospital Medicine's "The Hospitalist" and serves as Wellbeing Champion for Sutter Health.

He is recognized as a thought leader on how to improve the well-being of patients and physicians alike.

Personal Interests

Dr. Leif sees his work as an important part of a spiritual practice that brings great meaning to his life. He is an enthusiastic SF Bay swimmer and loves making music with friends and family. His perfect day might include searching for wildflowers and a swim in a mountain lake!
