Shawn S. Richardson, M.D.

I was born and grew up in Elk Grove, CA. I attended high school at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, after which I spent a year in Heiligenblut, Austria as an exchange student. I completed my undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at Harvard College. After college, I spent a year doing research at Massachusetts General Hospital, then proceeded to finish medical school at UC San Francisco.

I completed my residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), an orthopaedic specialty hospital in New York City which performs more than 15,000 hip and knee replacements each year as well as providing orthopaedic care for numerous professional sports teams. I stayed at HSS for an additional fellowship year where I learned advanced techniques in hip and knee replacement.

My goal as an orthopaedic surgeon is to help my patients reduce pain and increase function, allowing them to maintain the activities and lifestyles they love. I love discussing treatment options with my patients and helping to educate them, allowing them to make informed decisions about their care. My advice, decisions, and surgical techniques are based on the most up to date medical literature and evidence. Although I love to perform surgery, I trial non-surgical treatments whenever possible. If non-surgical treatments fail, surgery can often help patients accomplish their goals. I believe in using technology, when proven to be helpful, to improve patient outcomes.

In my free time I enjoy spending time in the outdoors, exercising, skiing, watching football, and spending time with my wife Lisa and rescue dog Bailey.
