Timothy A. Sanders, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Sanders combines rigorous scientific expertise with evidence-based clinical care to support the health and development of newborns. He is committed to advancing neonatal care through research, education, and collaboration while helping families navigate complex medical situations with compassion and thoughtful guidance.

Dr. Sanders serves as Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. He is a physician-scientist and neonatologist with extensive experience in clinical care, research, medical education, and program leadership. He earned a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Chicago and completed pediatric and neonatal training at Cornell, Boston Children's Hospital, and UCSF. Throughout his career, he has led neonatal transport, NeuroNICU, and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship programs at major academic medical centers. His research in neurobiology and early development has been published in leading scientific journals, including Nature and Science, and he is recognized for his commitment to mentoring and educating future healthcare professionals.
