Evaluation and management of functional swallowing and speech changes in the context of head and neck oncologic treatment. Includes management of alaryngeal communication, including electrolarynx training, tracheoesophageal prosthesis. Objective assessment of swallowing including MBSS and FEES access.

Lois L Chen, MS, CCC-SLP, is an Oncologic Speech-Language Pathologist at Sutter Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a wide range of swallowing, voice, and speech disorders, particularly in the context of complex head and neck cancer care. Her background additionally includes assessment and rehabilitation of swallowing problems (dysphagia) of advanced cardiopulmonary diseases, neurogenic disorders, as well as iatrogenic causes. She is particularly passionate about the comprehensive rehabilitation and multidisciplinary management of voice and swallowing challenges following both surgical intervention and adjuvant therapies for patients with head and neck cancer. 

Lois joined the Sutter team in 2025. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of California at Los Angeles, completed her graduate work at Northwestern University, and clinical fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Before joining our team, she worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCSF Medical Center (both inpatient and outpatient at the Voice and Swallowing Center/Head and Neck Oncology clinics).

Lois is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and participates in the association’s special interest groups for swallowing and voice disorders.
