Planning Your Maternity Leave
Preparing for maternity leave is more than just picking a date — it’s about creating a plan that supports your health, your baby’s needs and your family’s well-being. Thinking through your options early can help you feel more confident and avoid last-minute stress.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- After your baby is born, do you plan to return to work? When?
- Are you able to adjust your work schedule, such as working fewer days or hours? Is flex time or job sharing available?
- Can you afford to take the amount of leave you want?
- Does your job expose you to health hazards or require long hours?
- Do you want or need time off toward the end of your pregnancy?
- How long do you want to continue working before your due date?
- Is there a chance you could be at risk for preterm labor?
Know Your Rights
Both the state of California and the federal government have Family and Medical Leave Acts that outline your rights and restrictions related to time off with a new baby.
Plan Ahead
- Early in your pregnancy, discuss your planned leave with your employer.
- Get any agreements in writing before your leave begins.
- Contact your human resources or personnel representative to see if you qualify for state or employer disability payments.
- Ask for the necessary forms from your employer or the California State Disability Claims office.

Why This Matters
Taking time to plan your maternity leave helps protect your health, your income and your peace of mind. The earlier you start the conversation, the more options you’ll have — and the smoother your transition will be when your baby arrives.
