Vaginal Concerns

Pregnancy creates ideal conditions for common yeast infections. Learn care for down there.

During pregnancy, your body goes through incredible changes — including some you might not expect. Here’s how to help keep things comfortable and healthy.

Increased blood supply and hormones during pregnancy causes the vagina to increase its normal secretions and alter its chemistry (pH). This can create an ideal condition for the common vaginal infection, monilia (yeast), to grow.

To protect against yeast infections and vaginal discharge:

  • Wear skirts rather than pants
  • Wear 100% cotton underwear
  • Avoid douching during pregnancy unless advised by your healthcare provider
  • Call your healthcare provider if the discharge burns, itches, smells or causes genital swelling
  • Consider eating yogurt on a daily basis to increase the helpful bacteria in your system

Pregnancy limits the choice of medications that are safe to use to treat yeast infections. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before using previously prescribed medication or over-the-counter remedies.

If you notice any itching, burning, odor or swelling, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. Most causes are easy to treat, and getting the right care will help you stay comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
