What to expect in the NICU
If your newborn needs care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the sights and sounds can feel overwhelming at first. Monitors beep, alarms sound and specialized equipment surrounds your baby's bedside. It's a lot to take in — especially during such a tender time.
Please know you're not alone. Our team is here to walk you through every part of your baby's care, answer your questions and help you feel more comfortable in this new environment. The more you understand about what's happening, the more confident and connected you may feel with your baby.
Here's a look at what daily life in the NICU may involve and how you can stay close to your little one throughout the journey.

Daily rounds
Each morning, your baby's medical team gathers to discuss how your baby is doing, review test results and plan the day's care. We warmly welcome parents to join rounds whenever possible. It's a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from the team, ask questions and share what you've noticed about your baby.
If you can't be there in person, your baby's nurse or neonatologist will make sure you stay informed and included.
Primary nursing
Whenever possible, we pair your baby with a consistent group of nurses who get to know your little one — and your family — well. This approach, called primary nursing, helps build trust and continuity so your baby receives familiar, personalized care each shift.
Over time, these nurses often become a comforting presence for both babies and parents.
Regular updates
Your baby's nurse and neonatologist will keep you informed about any changes in your baby's condition or care plan. You're always welcome to ask questions, request more information or simply talk through what you're feeling. No question is too small.
If something feels unclear, please speak up. We want you to feel confident and comfortable with every step of your baby's care.
Family involvement
You’re one of the most important members of your baby's care team. As soon as your baby is stable, we encourage:
- Skin-to-skin holding, sometimes called kangaroo care, which supports bonding, temperature regulation and calm
- Participation in daily care such as diaper changes, gentle touch and soothing
- Involvement in feeding, whether by breast, bottle or another method your team recommends
Even small moments of connection can mean so much to your baby, and to you.
Getting comfortable in the NICU
The equipment around your baby's bed is there to help our team monitor and support your little one closely. Beeps and alarms are often routine and don't necessarily mean something is wrong. Your baby's nurse can walk you through what each device does and what the sounds mean, so the environment starts to feel more familiar.
Rest, nourishment and support matter for you, too. Please take breaks when you need them and lean on your care team, family and friends throughout your baby's stay.
