Microwaving Plastic Bags of Veggies?

Astrin Damayanti

Astrin Damayanti, R.D.

Question:

I love all the bags of vegetables that come pre-washed and provide directions for steaming in the plastic bag they are packed in. How safe is this? I'm microwaving in the same plastic bag used to transport and store the vegetables.

Answer:

Plastic containers or bags are not created equal. Some are microwave-safe and some are not. The FDA carefully regulates these materials to ensure that they meet its standards and specifications. In addition, the FDA requires that manufacturers test their products and measure the migration of chemicals into the food. Only containers that pass this test can display a microwave-safe sign.

Steam-bag vegetables are safe and specifically designed for use in microwave. They do not contain BPA or phthalates. Do not reuse steam bags for other purposes and always follow directions by the manufacturer.
