Dr. Deepak J. Soneji, MD, PhD
Neuroimmunologist & Neuro-Ophthalmologist
Sutter East Bay Medical Group
Dr. Deepak Soneji is a physician-scientist with dual training in neuroimmunology and neuro-ophthalmology, whose research spans molecular pain mechanisms, neuroinflammation, and central nervous system disorders. He earned his MD and PhD in Neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where his doctoral work focused on the sensitization of intact nociceptors following contralateral nerve injury.
Dr. Soneji has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, contributing to the understanding of purinergic signaling, TRPV1 channel regulation, and cortical reorganization in chronic pain. His early work at Stanford University helped pioneer real-time fMRI applications in pain modulation. More recently, his clinical research has addressed MOG antibody disease, multiple sclerosis, and COVID-19-associated neuroinflammatory syndromes.
He has presented at major conferences including the Society for Neuroscience, American Academy of Neurology, and North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and has received NIH funding through NRSA and T32 training grants. Dr. Soneji currently practices at Sutter East Bay Medical Group, integrating clinical care with translational neuroscience research.
