Dr. Michael Pham received his medical degree and went on to complete his internship and residency at the University of California San Francisco during training he completed a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard University. He then went on to complete his cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowships at Stanford University. Subsequently, he was recruited to the faculty at Stanford and served as the medical director of Heart Failure and Transplantation at the Department of Veterans Affairs regional advanced heart failure and transplant program in Palo Alto. He remained in these roles until 2016 when he was recruited to become the Medical Director of the CPMC Center for Advanced Heart Failure Therapies. Dr. Pham has been active in regional, national and international organizations in the field of heart failure and transplantation. He served as past chair of the Heart Failure and Transplantation Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. In addition, he was appointed as the Chief of the Division of Cardiology at CPMC in 2018. Through his leadership, the advanced heart failure therapies program and the division of cardiology have seen tremendous growth in volume, breadth of therapeutic options and significant improvements in patient outcomes.
Dr. Pham is actively engaged in clinical research in the fields of heart failure and transplantation including mechanical circulatory support and trials of novel therapeutics. Dr. Pham led one of the largest multicenter clinical trials in the field of heart transplantation, demonstrating the efficacy and safety of gene expression profiling to detect cardiac allograft rejection. These findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and have helped to significantly reduce the number of heart biopsies performed in the United States.
