Investigator Xiaowei (Sherry) Yan, PhD, MS

Xiaowei (Sherry) Yan, PhD, MS

Dr.   Yan is a data scientist and biostatistician, and a Principal Investigator at the Sutter Health Center for Health Systems Research (East Campus, currently operating as Sutter's Research Development and Dissemination). She specializes in methodology   development and the application of advanced analytics using Electronic Health   Records (EHR) and other clinical data in evaluation, disease prediction, and   population health management.

Dr. Yan’s expertise includes predictive   modeling, phenotyping/classification, observational study design and evaluation,   pragmatic trials design and evaluation in real-world settings.

She   has 10 years’ experience as a principal investigator, co-investigator, and  biostatistician for epidemiologic research, methodology, and translational  to   clinical practice in healthcare systems.   Her   research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NHDDK, NIHLB, and NINLM), the Donaghue Foundation, and various pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Yan develops predictive models to predict early onset of disease   (e.g., heart failure), and applies machine learning models and natural language   processing (NLP) models to identify disease phenotypes. She collaborates with  Sutter researchers and stakeholders on advanced analytics in population health management and point-of-care initiatives. Dr. Yan leads Sutter’s Center for   Health Systems Research efforts to use audit data from EHRs to measure,   standardize, and improve clinical processes at Sutter and at other medical   centers nationwide.

Dr.   Yan received master’s degrees from Chinese Academy of Sciences (in geophysics)  and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (in seismology), and a PhD in statistics  from the University of Memphis/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She is currentlypursuing MPH at the Harvard University, T.H. Chang School of Public Health

Five-year risk of incident disease following a diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis.

Study suggests either that chronic rhinosinusitis promotes onset of other diseases or is an indicator of systemic disease processes.

Breast cancer chemoprevention in primary care - assessing readiness for change.

PCPs infrequently assess breast cancer risk and rarely prescribe chemoprevention drugs for risk reduction.

Adiposity, inflammation, genetic variants and risk of post-menopausal breast cancer findings from a prospective-specimen-collection, retrospective-blinded-evaluation (PRoBE) design approach.

Findings confirm again that low penetrance genes involved in the inflammatory pathway may have a plausible causative role in post menopausal breast cancer.

Value of primary care diabetes management: long-term cost impacts.

System of care with an all-or-none bundled measure used in primary care for pts with diabetes may reduce long-term cost of care while improving health outcomes.

A phase 1/pilot study of radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of recurrent pediatric solid tumors.

Toxicity from RFA of recurrent pediatric solid tumors was real but limited.

Estimation of bone mineral density in children from diagnostic CT images: a comparison of methods with and without an internal calibration standard.

Phantom-less QCT of dCT adds clinically useful BMD information not typically attained from dCT, thereby augmenting patient care and possibilities for research.

Factors contributing to variability of quantitative viral PCR results in proficiency testing samples: a multivariate analysis.

The marked variability seen in clinical quantitative viral load results is associated with multiple aspects of molecular testing design and performance.

A new stochastic and state space model of human colon cancer incorporating multiple pathways.

Purpose is to develop a new stochastic and state space model for carcinogenesis of human colon cancer incorporating two biological mechanisms.

Primary care diabetes bundle management: 3-year outcomes for microvascular and macrovascular events.

System of care with an all-or-none bundled measure used in primary care for patients with diabetes may reduce the risk of MI, stroke, and retinopathy over 3 yrs

Does transition of urinary incontinence from one subtype to another represent progression of the disease?

Mixed UI might represent a more advanced stage of UI that may have implications for understanding disease progression.

Predictors of care seeking in women with urinary incontinence.

UI is highly prevalent with only a minority of women seeking care. Factors associated with care include older age, parity (1+), # MD visits, urgency UI subtype.

The iceberg of health care utilization in women with urinary incontinence.

Only a minority with UI appears to seek care and a fraction sees a pelvic floor specialist. It's important to educate women and PCPs.

The interaction of stress and urgency urinary incontinence and its effect on quality of life.

Estimate the impact of stress vs. urgency UI on QOL, and to determine whether the impact varies according to UI severity.

Use of electronic health records for early detection of high-cost, low back pain patients.

Results suggest that it is feasible to develop a dynamic, PCP visit-based predictive model for LBP care based on longitudinal data obtained in EHRs.

Clinical validation of the Bladder Health Survey for urinary incontinence in a population sample of women.

The BHS is highly reliable, with robust content and construct validity for detecting UI for use in population samples.

Mixed incontinence masked as stress induced urgency urinary incontinence.

Mixed UI express with stress induced urgency UI as the dominant type.

Patterns of health care utilization for low back pain.

LBP care use is variable, concentrated in small subgroups using disproportionate amts. of potentially avoidable care that reflect pt, provider characteristics.
