Coping With Alzheimer's and Dementia

At the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and other locations in Northern California, we offer a wealth of educational and support programs that can help patients and families who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Care Navigation Support

Finding your way through the many healthcare services and other resources your family might need after a diagnosis of dementia can be complex and time consuming. Our care navigators offer support services including:

  • Case Management — A case manager can help you find resources such as community programs, adult day programs, residential facilities, exercise groups and other therapeutic programs. The case manager can also refer you to financial and legal services that can help you make plans for long-term care, financial issues and more.
  • Patient Advocacy — A care navigation staff member can help you interact with your insurance company and other health-related vendors to ensure that you or your loved one receives appropriate care.
  • Emotional Support — Adjusting to cognitive changes can cause anxiety and stress for everyone. We offer emotional support for patients and their loved ones over the phone or in person.

Brain Health Classes and Support Groups

Sutter care centers have classes and ongoing support groups for patients, family members and caregivers dealing with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other cause of dementia. Several classes and support groups are offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization focused on Alzheimer’s care, support, education and research.

In some locations, Sutter care centers also have daytime healthcare programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease and others forms of dementia. These programs provide therapeutic activities, assistance with personal care, nursing care, physical, and occupational and speech therapies.

Alzheimer's Disease Research

Sutter Health Alzheimer's Disease Research
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually leaving the person without the ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that as many as 5 million Americans age 65 and older have Alzheimer's disease. Research works on ways to improve diagnosis and care for Alzheimer’s disease patients, as well as focusing on a way to cure and possibly prevent it.
