Sonohysterography (SHG)

When trying to conceive, you want to do everything you can to make sure that you’re successful. A sonohysterography, or SHG, is an imaging procedure that can be done to make sure your uterus appears healthy and ready to receive embryos.

This in-office procedure is typically done by injecting saline solution into the uterus through the cervical canal while using an ultrasound wand to see inside the uterus. The saline helps create clearer ultrasound pictures. After the SHG, your doctor will review your ultrasound images for abnormalities that may interfere with getting pregnant, like growths, masses and scar tissue.

This test is usually done after menstrual bleeding but before the twelfth day of your cycle. It takes about 30 minutes. It’s normal to feel some cramping during and after the procedure but pain should be minimal.
